Understanding Biblical Truths on Gender Identity and Sexuality Andrew Koske, August 16, 2023May 16, 2024 In today’s increasingly diverse and complex society, conversations surrounding gender identity and sexuality have become more prevalent than ever. While many viewpoints and ideologies exist, it Is crucial to explore biblical perspectives on these topics, which have a significant impact on the lives of countless individuals. These topics are being discussed in schools and among young children all over this country. It’s important that we train our children at a young age how to respond to these ideologies that are contradictory to Scriptures. In this blog, we will explore the key principles guiding biblical gender identity and sexuality, and how they can inform our understanding and approach. Ultimately, because God has spoken on these issues with clarity, we are God’s messengers and not His editors. On these issues that God has spoken clearly, we dare not be silent. Created in God’s Image: “The Christian identity is the only identity that is received and not earned.” – Timothy Keller The Bible teaches that every human being is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). This core belief states that gender and sexuality are inherent aspects of our identity. According to the Bible, one’s gender is not a social construct or a matter of personal preference, but rather a divine gift. Jesus also affirms creation of male and female from the beginning in Matthew (Matthew 19:4). The Bible also says that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made…” (Psalm 139:13-18). Our identity is not defined by anyone else. It is important that we teach young people this from the start. Male and Female: The Bible further affirms that God created humanity as male and female (Genesis 1:27, Matthew 19:4). This binary distinction emphasizes the complementary nature of the two genders. While the world may present various alternative gender identities, a biblical understanding acknowledges the biological and physiological differences between male and female as important and concrete aspects of God’s design. Gender dysphoria is the sense of mismatch between physical sex (body) and psychological gender identity (mind). In a recent, powerful message at my church, our pastor said, “The world says to listen to your mind and change your body. God’s Word says listen to God and change your mind. Don’t conform to this world but renew your mind in Him. Your body does not need to be transitioned; your mind needs to be transformed.” (Romans 12:1, 2) The Divine Institution of Marriage: The Bible highlights marriage as an institution established by God (Genesis 2:24). Jesus quotes from this old testament passage, affirming the design of a marriage relationship (Matthew 19:4-6). It is depicted as a lifelong, monogamous union between one man and one woman. This biblical perspective views marriage as the foundation of family and society, embodying God’s intention for sexual intimacy, companionship, and procreation. Chastity and Sexual Purity: The Bible places great emphasis on the call for sexual purity and self-discipline (1 Corinthians 6:13, 18-20). Sexual relations are deemed appropriate and sacred within the boundaries of marriage. Outside of marriage, the Bible says God will judge the sexually immoral (Hebrews 13:4). Adhering to these principles promotes healthy relationships, avoids harmful consequences, and honors God’s design for our bodies and emotions. Love, Compassion, and Understanding: While holding firmly to biblical principles, it is vital to approach discussions on gender identity and sexuality with love, compassion, and understanding. Jesus himself exemplified love and acceptance (not affirmation) toward individuals experiencing diverse struggles and challenges. It is our responsibility to emulate this compassion and provide support while adhering to biblical truths. Conclusion: Joel Kobernat said, “Believing what God says about you is what brings life and flourishing. We speak up not out of hate but out of love.” The biblical perspective on gender identity and sexuality rests on foundational principles grounded in God’s creation and design. Understanding and embracing these principles helps guide individuals in navigating their identities and relationships. While we may encounter diverse perspectives and challenges, holding steadfast to biblical truths should be accompanied by love, compassion, and a desire to share the truth with those are struggling with sexual sins. Remember, the Bible says, “…such were some of you.” (1 Corinthians 6:11) rather than such are some of you. There is freedom and redemption in Jesus Christ.
